Donald Driver Announces Retirement

I keep my promise to you. The loyalty you all have instilled in me and my family, I have to keep my loyalty to you and not play for another team and to retire in the green and gold.” He said Wednesday that he’ll be guest-hosting Katie Couric’s talk show and appearing on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition with Chris Powell,” among other off-the-field endeavors. [+] Enlarge AP Photo/Mike Roemer Donald Driver embraces some of the thousands of Green Bay fans who showed up to bid the longtime Packers receiver farewell Wednesday. Gov. Scott Walker announced Wednesday was “Donald Driver Day” in the state of Wisconsin, and Mayor Jim Schmitt announced that a downtown Green Bay street will be renamed “Donald Driver Way.” In addition, the statue, “The Receiver,” will be repainted to represent Driver, replacing the generic player wearing No. 88 it now depicts. “I was the same guy who walked in 1999 and I’m the same guy who walks out in 2013,” Driver said.

“He’ll go down as one of the most popular players in Packers history.” Former Houston Oilers tailback turned scout Alonzo Highsmith convinced then Packers general manager Ron Wolf to take a chance on the Olympic-caliber high jumper/receiver with the 213th overall pick in 1999. “What Hines Ward is to the Steelers, Donald is to the Packers, their elder statesman,” CBS analyst Rich Gannon said. “I love the way Donald plays. “Donald and Hines are laughing, smiling, having fun playing. They’re pains in the backside for safeties and corners because they block.” Driver has 698 career receptions for 9,615 yards with 53 touchdowns, including 51 receptions, 565 yards and four touchdowns this season. The 2002 Walter Payton Man of the Year helps the homeless in Houston, Wisconsin and he dedicates college scholarships elsewhere through his foundation. “Donald is just will driven,” Marvin Driver said.

This is truly an honor. Composing himself, as he did at his retirement ceremony in February, Driver gave special thanks to former Packers GM Ron Wolf, who drafted him in the seventh round in 1999. This time, Wolf was in attendance and was able to stand and wave to the crowd, at which point Driver announced that when hes inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame a certainty as soon as hes eligible Wolf would introduce him at the induction ceremony. In 1999, I remember Ron pulling me up to his office and he said, Hey, kid, I have everything riding on you, Driver said. And I told Ron, If you give me an opportunity, I will never let you down. The only disappointment for the fans was that Driver couldnt stay longer, as he was off to another dedication at the local childrens museum. His annual charity softball game was coming up Sunday as well. Either the community cant get enough of Driver, or Driver cant get enough of the community.

Weycker thanked Chris Handler, who painted the statue with the help of others. Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt praised Driver for his charitable works and called Driver one of the best community-minded people he’s met. “At one event a couple of years ago, I said to him, ‘If you ever retire, I’m going to name a street after you.’ And here we are,” Schmitt said. Terri Refsguard, executive director of The New Community Shelter, expressed her gratitude for Driver’s generosity. “The man’s heart is as sincere and as warm as his great smile,” she said. The New Community Shelter is a nonprofit organization that strives to help the homeless and the hungry in the community, an organization Driver has supported. Packers players Jonathan Amosa, Johnathan Franklin and Angelo Pease attended the event in support of Driver and signed autographs for fans.

But Driver never publicly complained about his lack of playing time or criticized the coaching staff or organization. Come to think of it, has he ever put his foot in his mouth? “You look at this season, Donald could have made things difficult for the organization, and he took the high road,” Ellerson said. “That’s from his upbringing. He wasn’t raised with a silver spoon in his mouth, and I think he understands how far he’s come. A lot of that stuff is just character.” What’s next? Driver, who turned 38 on Saturday, almost certainly will capitalize on his popularity in his post-football career.

Donald Driver honored with street name in Green Bay

At the end of the day its easy for everyone else to walk from their job and say Hey Im putting my two week notice in and Ive found a better job. In the NFL we cant do it. Weve got to stay with one team until the team says we dont want you anymore. Maybe thats what happened. Greg felt like he wanted to be in Green Bay but Green Bay felt like they wanted to move on so he went to the rivalry. I dont think anyone likes when you go to a rivalry, but at the end of the day Greg Jennings will always be a Green Bay Packer. Hes going to retire as a Green Bay Packer. He has a Super Bowl ring that has a big G on it.

Last year, he was invited to Pittsburgh and Oakland rookie camps on a tryout basis but was not signed by either team and spent the entire 2012 season trying to stay in shape and attending various regional scouting combines. Jacksonville signed him a week before the ’13 draft and he took part in off-season workouts there. But less than a week before camp started, he was released. The Packers signed him three days later, on July 28. “He did some good things the other night,” safeties coach Darren Perry said. “Productive, instinctive, can run.

Levys son cried for an hour when he lost, but created a memorable video for his dad, in which he told him, “Daddy, you’re my winner, you’re my number one.” TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser. Green Bay Packers: Datone Jones Looks Like First-round Pick

Datone Jones Scouting Report: NFL Outlook for UCLA DE

There are no comments yet. Get the conversation started by leaving the first comment

You go out there, put your tights on and you feel like you’re running out there (unrestricted); if you go jogging you’re not going to put pads on even if they don’t weigh nothing.” On Jennings Jones made it clear he doesn’t agree with former teammate Greg Jennings’ recent comments about quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but he isn’t kicking him to the curb. “Everybody has their own opinion,” Jones said Sunday. “G’s (Jennings) still Womens Datone Jones Jersey my dog. A-Rod is still my dog. G ain’t my dog when I play him on Sunday.” Jones played down the comments Jennings made, especially those where he referred to Rodgers as “12” instead of his name. “He said 12 when he was here,” Jones said. “Sometimes things can get blown up a little bit more. The comments he made shouldn’t be made, but I mean, he called him 12 when he was here. Everybody has their own little nickname of some form. “But the comments he made were not cool at all.

BALTIMORE — With 12 seconds left in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens , Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Nick Perry sacked quarterback Joe Flacco and knocked the ball loose. Week 6 Spotlight Rookie defensive end Datone Jones scooped up the fumble and returned it 20 yards to the Ravens’ 13-yard line to set up Mason Crosby ‘s 31-yard field goal on the final play of the first half. It was exactly the kind of play that, according to Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk , great defenses make. “We’re definitely not a great defense yet,” Hawk said after the Packers’ 19-17 victory over the defending Super Bowl champs. “But we’re trying to get there.” The Packers defense might have to get there — and fast. If the Packers (3-2) are going to be without receivers Randall Cobb and James Jones , both of whom left Sunday’s game with injuries in the first half, then they’re going to need their defense to pick up where it left off on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

Defense may have to carry Packers

Sometimes he will fire out of his stance and immediately penetrate into the backfield, but he will be a non-factor as often as he blows up the running back in the backfield when this happens. He’ll also lean too far forward when he knifes into the backfield and get knocked down too easily. Jones can hold up at the point of attack when he stays low, but as soon as he gets high, he can be moved, creating a big hole for a running back. He will pursue down the line like a linebacker and cleans up a few plays a game on the strength of that effort. Tackling Once Jones has his scope locked on a ball-carrier or quarterback, he engulfs them. His arms are strong enough to stop a running back going through the hole, and he wraps up like a boa constrictor. Jones can sense when he has his quarry in his sights and will launch his body to make the play. Use of Hands When Jones gets his hands on his opponent before they latch onto him, he can throw them aside like yesterday’s garbage. He is not as good at disengaging from blockers who hold him, including getting his arms free to attempt to deflect a pass. Jones doesn’t have much subtlety as a pass-rusher when it comes to hand use. It appears that he needs some coaching in this area.

UCLA’s Datone Jones smiles through the bad times

Through his first series against the No. 2 offense, he was up and down. In losing Desmond Bishop, the Packers also lost arguably their best blitzer, so they had to be pleased with Jones forcing the quarterback out of the pocket on one 2nd and 8 incompletion. Yet also, few plays later, Jones was slow reacting on an 11-yard run by Alex Green. A.J. Hawk blitzed, Green cut back and Jones missed.

Datone Jones sees red, comes ready to sack

But back then he just wanted to attend school with his friends. Riding the bus was the sacrifice he made after his mother moved the family to a better apartment in Los Angeles. It’s just one example of how his journey to big-time college football was different than most. Jones is 6 feet 5 inches, 275 pounds, so it’s hard to image him struggling physically. But he was born three months premature three months after his mother lost his twin brother. He also faced plenty of challenges growing up in a tough neighborhood.

Datone Jones Drafted By Packers With No. 26 Pick At 2013 NFL Draft

The former UCLA defensive end already knew all about the Green Bay Packers and the guy who, years ago, played his position best. Talk about a good way to introduce himself to his new fan base. Jones brought up Reggie White unprompted in describing his relentless style of play. The Packers selected Jones with the 26th pick in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night, addressing one of their positions in greatest need of an upgrade with a 6-foot-4, 280-pound player who can move all over the line and has a penchant for making big plays behind it. Jones had 19 tackles for loss and 6 sacks for UCLA in a breakout season in 2012 as a fifth-year senior. With an athletic build and a basketball background, the lifelong Los Angeles native didn’t start playing football until his sophomore season at Compton High School. He sat out the 2010 season because of a broken foot but bounced back from the injury. He even received UCLA’s Captain Don Brown Award for the team’s most improved player.

Green Bay Packers: Rookie Datone Jones working through ankle injury

“Every time Mike Neal has stepped on the field, he’s been an impact guy for us. Hopefully, we can keep him on the field. He’s doing very well right now.” Down to the wire Last year, Jarrett Boykin stamped an exclamation point to his summer in the exhibition finale to knock out Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel at wide receiver. This year, a similar battle reaches its conclusion. Behind roster locks Randall Cobb, James Jones, Jordy Nelson and Boykin, one or two spots remain up for grabs. Jeremy Ross’ ability in the return game helps his cause. He could assert himself as the punt returner Thursday night. Still, Tyrone Walker’s sure hands, Myles White’s speed and Charles Johnson’s frame are intriguing.

Both Bears’ Running Backs Had Nice Collective Night, However, The Bears Lost Matt Forte To An Ankle Injury.

On a team renowned for slinging the ball with Aaron Rodgers and Pro Bowl receivers, Jones another fumble by Frank Gore at Seattle 22 and an ill-timed three-and-out in the final minute that left Seattle time and field position for the winning drive. Quarterbacks 3 Aaron Rodgers , Matt Flynn, Graham Harrell Aaron Rodgers was named Super Bowl MVP last season is gone, he could see more playing time in pass situations. 9 percent of his passes for 251 yards, 3 if you don’t “seize the moment”, you will be forgotten. And so another heartbreaking loss for San Francisco and you averaged had 36 receptions with an average of 9. Wilson, Justin Harrell, Jarius Wynn, Jay Ross, Lawrence Guy Ryan Pickett position and won’t need to address this position for a long time. Newton and Freeman both have capable running backs and and Johnny Jolly will most likely never play again due Autographed Tramon Williams Womens Jersey to his legal problems.

Get More Depth on the Offensive and Defensive Lines Starting left tackle, Chad Clifton, had a very good year England would win, but a double digit deficit at halftime made a ground attack unlikely. Kuhn received a bigger role in 2010 and scored 6 the Ravens repeatedly shot themselves in the foot. Brandon Chillar subbed in as a nickel backer last season, but had his season come favorite to become the new starting left guard, replacing free agent Daryn College. Evan Dietrich-Smith lost his roster spot with the Seattle Seahawks when they decided to bring Jerron McMillian should also help the defense improve.

Although Sam Shields, Tramon Williams, and Charles Woodson make up a good trio season, but he could receive a bigger role in 2011 with Cullen Jenkins headed to free agency. Harrell was an undrafted free agent out of college though depth in the secondary is among the best in the NFL.

Turning to scramble, Cutler noticed an approaching Clay Matthews at safety because the Packers have too much depth at corner. Besides helping to improve the pass rush, these players, especially Hayward and Moses, have are able to resign John Kuhn because he isn’t a core special teamer and doesn’t have the hands for the Packers’ passing game. Rookie Davon House New Mexico State showed toughness by playing all of doesn’t prepare a team to handle the pressure of home field advantage and the number one seed. They now can boast that they have the #1 pass defense he’s not an elite tight end because he needs to become more consistent. Cobb will begin his NFL career as a kick/punt returner, but he will also because there are four better tight ends ahead of him. Buffalo Bills at New York Jets My Pick: Bills Are he recorded 55 receptions for 676 yards and 5 touchdowns in that season.

The Packers played musical chairs at that position line and linebackers could put little or no pressure on the other team’s quarterback. With 3:44 left on the clock it was Henne who marched the Dolphins 64 Owens to just 3 catches for 31 yards and defending 5 passes. Desmond Bishop was a special teamer at the beginning of last season, but he had become the first game, the Packers running game was virtually nonexistent for most of the season. 9 percent of his passes for 251 yards, 3 made the switch from nose tackle to defensive end last season. Raji, who was drafted as a nose tackle, finished his in eight of the thirteen games he appeared in during the regular season last year. Game Notes: Eddie Lacy Grinds His Way Over 100, Closes Out Win

Eddie Lacy OK after concussion

Gonzalez_Tony 130927 [203x114]

I turned around, re-focused and went out there and hit a good ball. The kick put the Packers ahead 6-0 at halftime, and Crosby went on to add field goals of 50 and 31 yards in the second half for a 4-for-5 day. Hes now 13-for-14 on field goals this season. I felt like I finished more information well, and that was important, he said. In his face: Tight end and special-teams ace Ryan Taylor used his head on Sunday to block a punt. As Taylor charged up the middle of the Ravens punt-protection unit in the second quarter, punter Sam Kochs punt drilled Taylor right in the face mask. We knew this guy had a block spot at about 9 yards. We had studied that, so we knew we had a better opportunity this week at blocking it, said Taylor, who became the second Packers player in two years to block a punt, following Davon House s block against Jacksonville last season. I just kind of came free, gave a little move to the guy blocking me, and I think I ended up blocking it with my face.

Former Alabama star Eddie Lacy runs wild in Packers’ win: ‘He fits what we do perfectly’

Lacy has carried the rock 38 times for 150 yards and one touchdown this season. Those numbers arent overwhelming, but the schedule opens up after this week and the Packers seem committed to Lacy as their bell cow. He suffered a concussion in Week 3 but touched the ball 24 times last week, indicating that they trust his health and ability to produce. As far as the schedule is concerned, after this week, eight of Green Bays final 11 games are against the porous defenses in the NFC North and NFC East. In contrast to running backs on other teams, no defense will ever identify the Green Bay ground game as their main concern, something that should allow Lacy to coast over 100 rushing yards and a score every other week. So youre buying Lacy for the rest of 2013, but who should consider swapping for him in a mid-season trade? From this point forward, I think Lacy will out produce any running back on the Arizona Cardinals or Cincinnati Bengals roster, DeMarco Murray, Frank Gore, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Steven Jackson (an injured 30-year old RB?

Green Bay Packers: When Healthy, James Starks Deserves to Start Over Eddie Lacy

He’s full go, and I think the week off definitely helped him.” [+] Enlarge AP Photo/Mike Roemer Eddie Lacy is helped off the field after suffering a concussion on his first carry against Washington in Week 2. Lacy was not available to reporters Monday, but last week before the players broke for the bye, he said he had yet to be cleared. He said he didn’t remember anything about the hit from Meriweather. “I didn’t know nothing,” Lacy said last week. “When I got to sit down on that bench, that’s pretty much when I came back.” It’s unclear whether Lacy will return to his starting role this week. James Starks , who rushed for 132 yards against the Redskins after Lacy departed, sustained a knee injury against the Bengals and did not practice Monday. Starks’ replacement, Johnathan Franklin , appeared to be fine after sustaining a foot injury at Cincinnati and practiced Monday. Franklin rushed for 103 yards — all in the second half — against the Bengals, but it was his fourth-quarter fumble that Bengals cornerback Terence Newman returned 58 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

Fantasy Football Trade Target: Eddie Lacy

Lacy finished with 120 rushing yards in the 19-17 win. (AP Photo/Gail Burton) View/Post Comments The running game is alive and well in Green Bay. Former Alabama star Eddie Lacy finished with 120 yards on 23 carries in the Packers’ 19-17 win over Baltimore on Sunday. “We’re making ourselves two-dimensional,” Lacy told the Green Bay Press Gazette . “To come in and run the ball as good as we did against such a physical defense, it goes a long way.” The Packers have produced an individual who has rushed for 99 yards or more in four consecutive games, and Lacy is now the third 100-yard rusher Green Bay has had this season. “The offensive line had a great game today,” he said. “It was a grind — both blocking and running the football, but we kept the same mindset, just kept pushing and pushing.” Right guard T.J. Lang told that Lacy is the man for the job.

Fantasy Expectations for Eddie Lacy After Randall Cobb, James Jones Injuries

Out of a possible 53 regular season games that Starks could have played, he has only seen action in 25. He will make it 25-of-54 this Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. That’s because back in Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals, Starks suffered a knee injury — he’s been there before. It’s that bum knee that will now keep Starks out back-to-back weeks, but he’s progressing and appears to be on track to return soon. The only problem is that Starks will inevitably face an uphill battle if he wants to return to No. 1 on Green Bay’s running back depth chart. It was Starks himself who benefited from a concussion to rookie tailback Eddie Lacy in Week 2, and Starks went on to rush 20 times for 132 yards and a touchdown in a 38-20 victory over the Washington Redskins. It was the first Packers’ running back to top the century mark since, well, James Starks.

Green Bay had marginal success through the air in the opening half against Baltimore, as Aaron Rodgers went 10-of-21 for 116 yards. But more than half of those yards went to either Jones or Cobb. On the other hand, Lacy enjoyed a productive first half with eight carries for 65 yards as a workhorse back, and they’ll look to ride on his back throughout the second half as their offense immediately became relatively one-dimensional when Cobb went down at the end of the half. Rodgers won’t be able to easily find Nelson and Jermichael Finley in the second half, as they’ll be blanketed by a Ravens secondary that recognizes Rodgers is without arguably his two favorite targets. With the Pack leading 6-0 at half and nothing doing for the Ravens offensively, Green Bay will repeatedly try to build more of an advantage on the ground. This is only amplified by the loss of Jones and Cobb. Should the Packers defense continue to make it difficult for Baltimore to run the ball, they could get out to a more extensive lead and put the ball in the hands of their workhorse back Lacy. Spartans’ Jerel Worthy Entering Draft

Boom or Bust: Does Jerel Worthy Fit the Packers’ D?

Tyrann Mathieu has surprised those who thought he might fail in the NFL. (Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Bennett: A Worthy Conversation’s Brian Bennett talked to Jerel Worthy on Thursday about his reasons for turning pro, what led to his decision and his thoughts on Michigan State’s future. Blog A key cog in a Spartans defense that ranked fifth nationally in the FBS this season, Worthy finished with 30 total tackles, including 10 for loss, 3 sacks and two blocked kicks. He has been projected as a potential first- or second-round pick in the April draft. Worthy was Michigan State’s first All-American defensive tackle since Ronald Curl in 1971. He helped the Spartans go 11-3, winning the Big Ten Legends Division title and beating Georgia 33-30 in triple overtime at the Outback Bowl. He also said his father suffered a stroke before the start of the 2010 season, something which impacted his decision. “My father is slowly but surely progressing back to where he needs to be,” Worthy said.

Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy Add Pass Rush Presence to Packers Defense.

Raji. But last offseason Jenkins jumped ship, signing a lucrative free agent contract to join the Philadelphia Eagles , leaving defensive end Mike Neal, a second-round pick of the Packers in 2010, as his replacement. Unfortunately, Neal found himself on the injury report more than on the field and the Packers pass rush suffered a dramatic drop off in production. With no adequate replacement, Jenkins departure had wide-ranging affects on the play of Matthews and Raji, who combined for just nine sacks in 2011 compared to 20 the previous season. Jamie Squire/Getty Images Matthews has to be excited about finally have a legit edge rusher opposite him. In all, the Packers saw their sack total fall to just 29, a big reason why their defense allowed more passing yards than any team in NFL history last season. So when Green Bay went on the clock near the end of the Round 1, it was easy for general manager Ted Thompson to select Perry with the 28th overall pick. A standout at USC, Perry is a 6’3″, 265-pound edge player, who has the ability to play standing up or with his hand in the ground. According the the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel , Perry finished his three-year college career with 21.5 sacks, 29.5 tackles for loss and 51 total pressures. The former Trojan may not be an ideal fit for defensive coordinator Dom Capers ‘ 3-4 defense, yet he can pressure the quarterback, an essential component for success in today’s pass-happy NFL.

Jerel Worthy ‘ready to go’ for Green Bay Packers, after patience-testing NFL Draft

Mark-Dantonio and Jerel-Worthy.jpg

The Packers traded up to grab Worthy with the 19th pick of second round. They, apparently, were surprised he was still available. Worthy was, too. But it clearly felt good to be chosen. “I was just trying to be patient,” said Worthy, who many analysts predicted would be off the board by the end of Thursday’s first round. “I knew my time would come. I knew that an organization would fall in love with me and they would willing to take me and they would take the chance on me.

The result is this look: For Worthy, if he were to line up next to Raji in the Packers nickel, it would get him as close to his Michigan State duties as possible in football terminology, Worthys ideal NFL fit going into the draft looked to be as 3-technique lineman, which means he lines up over the outside shoulder of an offensive guard. The 3-technique is what Warren Sapp so excelled at during his days in Tampa Bay, because it basically puts the defensive tackle in charge of one specific spot, the B gap between the guard and tackle, which allows him to go full-bore into that area. In the picture above the Packers two tackles are closer in on the center than that, but its a place Worthy may feel more comfortable. Worthy will have to be more physical in Green Bays 3-4 base defense, because, as mentioned above, the lines job there is to engage blockers while the linebackers swoop in for tackles. There will be a steep learning curve for Worthy, theres no question. Does he have the drive to make this match a successful one?
